Providing Free Debt Advice

The Money Advice Service reports that 15.9% of the population are over-indebted, which accounts for more than 8.26m people in the United Kingdom.

The East Midlands Region has over 600,000 over-indebted adults, which equates to 16.2% of the adult population. Nottingham was the Local Authority area with the highest proportion of over-indebted people in the region (21.9%), followed by Leicester (21.0%) and Lincoln (20.0%). The areas with the lowest proportion of the population who are over-indebted were Rushcliffe (11.9%), the Derbyshire Dales (12.0%) and Harborough (12.2%).

People from all walks of life can be affected by debt, but research by the Money Advice Service and CACI has found that there are a number of key factors which are linked to over-indebtedness including – renting rather than owning your home; having a larger family; being a single parent; having a low income; and being a younger adult (particularly between the ages of 25-34).

East Midlands Money Advice Partners can provide free debt advice to people who need it across the East Midlands. We are funded by the Money Advice Service to make this advice available and to work together to ensure that advice across the partnership is of a consistently high quality. The Partnership is led by the Community Advice and Law Service, based in Leicester.
